REGATTAS

INFORMATION

Regattas Overview

Regattas are organized boating competitions.  Most of the Fairfax High School Regattas and the water training are held on the Occoquan at the Sandy Rund Regional Park.  A map and driving directions are located under the Direction tab. Regattas are usually held on Saturdays and last most of the day. When the regatta schedule is available ahead of time, it will be posted to the Fairfax Crew website.  However, often the race-heats schedules are not released until very close to race day.  Rowers usually will be notified of their race schedule on the day before the event.

There is a lengthy walk, via wooded trails, to get from the Sandy Run parking areas to the regatta finish line. This is a very hilly trail through the woods.  Allow at least an hour before the race to give you enough time to drive, park and then walk to the finish line area.  If you do not want to walk, you can take the shuttle buses ($1) between the parking lot and the finish line judges stand.

Volunteers staff the regattas.  Please be courteous and supportive.   We can always use more volunteers-- operating a chase boat, helping the referees, working in the concession stands, or helping with dozens of  other jobs. Contact any of the Fairfax Crew Boosters Board members to get more information.

Directions

Driving

WATCH your speed!!!  Sandy Run Park is VERY SERIOUS about speeding.  Many people, including school buses, have been pulled over for going only a few miles over the speed limit.  Several infractions may disqualify your child from rowing in the regatta.

 Parking

Park at the end of the access road to Sandy Run Park in one of the parking lots. Traffic guides in the road will direct you; a parking fee of $10 is required. Sandy Run encourages you to car pool.  You may leave the park but if you've paid for parking you must get a park pass from the attendence so you won't have to pay twice.

During the state regatta parking is at a premium and difficult to obtain.  If you plan on staying for the regatta you should plan on car pooling.

What To Wear And Bring To A Regatta

In the early regattas it most likely will be very wet and cold.  However, as the season progresses into April it can get hot and sunny.  It is not unusual to have the first regatta temperatures in the 50's and the later regattas in the 80's.

Dress very casually!  Multiple layers are better than one, even in warm weather. A warm jacket and warm, comfortable, waterproof walking shoes or boots good for walking on hilly dirt paths are highly recommended.  The forest paths at Sandy Run will turn muddy when the crowds arrive so don't wear your best, white sneakers!

The Fairfax crew team wear uniforms; the uniforms are selected and distributed prior to the rowing season.  You may also consider bringing:

  • Hats, sunscreen and sunglasses - It can get very bright sitting by the water's edge all day
  • Rain gear, umbrella, lip balm, insect repellant
  • Cameras and binoculars-- you can see the rowers a lot better
  • Food and drinks-- concessions stands near the boathouse and the finish line sell snacks and drinks

Stadium seating is available.  The stadium has an cover which offers some protection against the rain or sun.  If you choose to use the stadium seating you may wish to bring a stadium cushion.  Others perfer to carry small foldable chairs and sit closer to the water.

Enjoying The Regattas

If you want to sit down during the events you can walk down the trails to the finish line area where you will find concrete bleachers. Bring a soft cushion to sit on.  There are also other areas close to the finish line where you can seat on the ground or you can bring a lightweight folding chair.  You can buy a copy of the regatta schedule, food and drinks at the snack bar near the finish line (soda, water, hot dogs, burgers, etc).

And don't forget binoculars!  It's sometimes difficult to make out which boat belongs to which team.  The secret is to look at the oars which has a different color and symbol for each school.  Below is how you can tell which team is which from a distance.

These are a list of all the oar styles used in the 2009 regattas at Sandy Run.

Just in case you can't make out the name, you may wish to print off OARS.

Start and Finish Lines

The start line is far down the river near the dam.  It is difficult to see the beginning of the race without a strong set of binoculars.  The announcers let people know when the teams are on the water and in what lane.  Lane Six is the lane closes to the Fairfax side.  Lane One is the lane closes to the Prince William side of the river.

The finish line is closes to the reviewing stands and is actually a marker on the Prince William side of the Occuquan.  Judges watch from the Fairfax side as the boats cross this line for timing purposes.

Emergencies

All regattas have volunteer Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) squads on site. They are there for your benefit. They, like everyone else involved in the regatta, are donating their time. Please let them know how much you appreciate their contributions.

Please note that several laws govern what the EMT can and cannot do in the event of a medical emergency. The EMTs provide us with two levels of response: basic life support and advanced life support. In the event that advanced life support is activated, they are legally required to evacuate the victims to the hospital to be further attended to by a physician. Generally, in addition to a serious accident, any situation that would require an EMT to administer medication, other than oxygen, is considered advanced life support.

If you or your student receives minor first aid from someone other than the EMT during the course of the regatta, please stop by and have the EMTs review your incident at your earliest convenience.

Food and  Water

As in the past we will set up a table for parents to donate food for the rowers.  The food supplied on the tables is opened to all Fairfax High School rowers and their parents.  This year the board is asking for only healthy snacks and drinks to be provided.  To ensure consistency, the board will be distributing a list of things to bring and coordinating with parents to ensure an even distribution of supplies.

In the past Sandy Run has allowed bottle water.  This has created numerous environmental problems and this year Sandy Run is discouraging bottle water.  Fairfax Crew will provide a container of water and ask rowers and parents to bring recyclable containers for filling up multiple times.  It is recommended names and the FHS be put on the containers.
