VHSL Sports Pre-Participation Physical Examination and Screening

VHSL Sports Pre-Participation Physical Examination and Screening For the low, low price of $50, your rower can get their physical completed and turned in directly to the athletics trainers (so we don't have to chase you down!) and they'll be covered for the entirety of the 2016-17 school year. That will suffice for any and all in-season competitions, practices, green days, conditioning workouts, and the like, for all sports at FHS. It's also a fundraiser for the athletic training department, to help them help our kids throughout the year. If you are unable to make the June 2nd date at Fairfax High School, no need to miss this opportunity, simply choose another school with a date that works for you.

HANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING in our FALL ERG-A-THON!  A smattering of pictures can be found on our Fairfax High School Crew Club Facebook page!  SHOUT OUT to Sue Newman for pulling it all together and Mary Moore for crafting our rowing--o-meter!   The kids, coaches and even a few parents brought that total t 349,588 meters rowed today!

HOLIDAY SHOPPING - SCRIP Plastic Card orders were due: 11/14/2014.  Missed the deadline?
Note: you can purchase some items, but you have to wait until after the holidays to get "plastic cards".

So don't delay! Create that account! We recommend giving yourself a couple days to get this started.

  • Go to www.shopwithscrip.com

  • Register an account (or log in if you have one).

  • Consider how you want payments to work (check vs. presto pay/pay pal like).    If you choose check you will be simply mailing checks to our coordinator before purchases are authorized. PrestoPay gives you a PayPal "like" immediate method to purchase items.  Once you've decided....

  • Search for items, like restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, etc.

  • Note that some items are physical cards, and some are like e-gift cards, and some are reloadable (this means you have to have already purchased and received the physical card).

  • Find the items - What's the best way for YOU to purchase these items - either by check or PrestoPay.

  • Checks are familiar and easy but orders are held until the check is received.

  • PrestoPay seems easy but we found it takes a couple days for them to go through the transaction to create the account, then for them to make two small deposits (10-20 cent) and for you and our coordinator to confirm them before it becomes active.

Some favorite items so far:  Gas Cards, Grocery Cards, Restaurant Cards, Dept Store cards to name a few.  NOTE: Some stores/restaurants have days where they double their benefit! See Sue Newman's email from Oct 31st that introduces you to SCRIP for more information.

ERG-A-THON
Saturday November 8, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm we will set up about a dozen ergs in front of the “stage” at Fairfax Corner (across from the fountain, by the movie theatre). We will begin setting up at 12:30. If you rented an erg this summer please bring it with you! Please come dressed in Fairfax Crew spirit wear, if you have it, and of course wearing the appropriate spandex clothing for the erg.  Please see Sue Newman's October 16th email for more info.

Racing and Carpooling - Important!

Racing begins the weekend of the 22nd of March at the Polar Bear Regatta! It is a varisty-only race with a few exceptions - novices are expected to attend, but will not row for the most part. Carpooling is suggested as there is never enough parking and is charged per vehicle.

Novice racing begins on March 29th at the Regional Park Regatta. Parents, please again try to arrange carpools. It can be useful to meet up at the Giant on Ox Rd and drive a single car into the park.  There is also a Five Guys, Sweet Frog and a Starbucks located in that shopping center.

TWITTER UPDATES: @ExtraChrisbi

All, we have heard a lot of feedback from our rowers and have decided to streamline communication by adding a Twitter account to FHS Crew.  The account will be managed at first by the coaching staff and will transition to also being managed by elected team spokespeople or captains.

Notes that rowers are asked not to pursue their coaches on Facebook, and are asked not to follow any coach on personal social media without first obtaining permission. Parents, coaches will likely not add you on Facebook, but feel free to follow any listed social media.  Pictures and videos from races will be flooded through Instagram this year on an account intended mostly for rowing as soon as it is cleared for that purpose. Keep in mind, however, that coaches try their very best to have lives outside of rowing.

HANDBOOK:

Rowers, Parents, anyone with questions should take a quick look through our very thorough handbook which can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/12kPHleOdXIN6t2xp6fC0AwL2Fg4Jx80lnbmN8RXOj_8/edit?usp=sharing

PASTA PARTIES:

Each Friday before regattas the team traditionally tries to get together from 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM for a pasta party at the home of a rower at at the high school.  Please refer to our email updates for locations and times! Thank you to all families who have hosted or are hosting a pasta dinner this year.

Removed March 18:

The JL Store is open! Get your uniforms here if you have not yet ordered! If you need a size estimate talk to a coach or a fellow rower of roughly the same size and body type. JL Store closes at midnight on February 10.

http://jlracing.com/page.FairfaxHS.html

There will be a “sizing” kit* available for rowers to see what the typical uniform sizes are. Also see the examples below on how to measure your rower. So yes, it appears you can order one size for the top and another for the bottom. EACH uniform will be made individually for each rower- so you want to be sure that you take the time to measure or try BEFORE you order. PRICES WILL GO UP ON FEBRUARY 10th.

All rowers are required to submit a US Rowing waiver here: https://rosters.usrowing.org/waiver.

Returning rowers, please search for your last name and birthday and renew your waiver.

New rowers, use the search and when it returns nothing, follow the instructions for new rowers

OUR ATHLETE CODE IS: z3pb6

Do your best on the 4-question safety quiz

Mark "NO" for the US Rowing Team scouting video unless you want to be dragged into watching a long video
